The Tarpon Gods were kind to anyone fishing the week of may 3-9 this year in the keys.

The weather finally calmed down and the fish showed up all over the back country……and were hungry.

Here’s a little video I put together from those days.

The other day my cousin and I went out to the Edisto River on our kayaks to enjoy the water and try to get some fishing in. The Charleston Angler outfitted us with all of the fly gear needed to fish the fresh water stretch of the Edisto.  Unfortunately I was so stoked about my new gear that I forgot to ask how to go about using it.  These next two videos show me giving it my best with the fly rod in a fish feeding frenzy. As it turns out I probably should have just brought a net. The first short video is me changing out flies after a giant bass literally jumps and lands on my line.  When I see this happen, I change to a larger white popper hoping to crush the fish.

Now that I’ve changed out flies, it’s time to catch that big one….right? Instead the fish decide to make fun of me with their mocking acrobatics all around me. During this short video, you can see at least half a dozen fish surface all around me. If you have any advice for me, let me know! They say that a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work, but to be honest, I don’t remember the last time I was this stressed out at work. It might be time for me to sign up for one of John Irwin’s monthly fly fishing classes. Well until next time, cheers.

Myself, JMS-ILM, and di hrd, joined slip slidin Tuesday for a day of offshore trolling/jigging. Started out the morning trolling a bit and managed to catch the first YELLOWFIN on the boat…..although it was only about 20″ long and had to go back. Not much happening other than a few blackfins on topwater for our friends Chip, Arlen, and Mikey.

Jigged the bottom a bit only to find a lot of snags and a few sea monsters. Around lunchtime we pushed offshore to try our hand at the snowies. Pushed out to 1025 feet before we made the call to run back into the break.

Now I remind you that it’s now 2:00pm and the Slip Slidin’ boat does not have a fish in the box…..a rare feat indeed. As we move back into where we started, the ocean came alive.

First fish to die was a lonely mahi that swam by the boat and inhaled di hrd’s topwater plug. After that it was something that words cannot describe…..

What we witnessed was the most incredible display of predator/prey that any of us have ever seen on the ocean. Blackfins as far as you could see were chasing flying fish out of the water only to explode on them as soon as they hit the water.

It didn’t take long for us to find some topwater plugs and rig up every castable rod on the boat (which was only 3). Didn’t take long for us to figure this game out…..

Check out the fish busting on the left side of this picture. You can clearly see 1 fish completely out of the water and another one busting the surface:

These were not your ordinary 10 lb blackfins though….fatties, and LOTS of them:

This particular one (along with a LOT of the other ones we would catch) fell for a Sebile Bonga Jerk. I think he wanted it…..

Here’s what you all have REALLY been asking for—-the VIDEO!! I took many different short videos during the day and simply put them all together to show you this as it happened……MAKE SURE to watch it all the way to the end because there’s some great footage at the end of the flick! The quality is a bit poor because it was taken with my digital camera but it does the job none the less…

Cleaned fish yesterday and found them stuffed full of flyers—go figure! Here are some of the findings:

Carolina Reds follow three fly anglers across the marshes of the low country in South Carolina in pursuit of Redfish. The piece conveys the immense pleasure these anglers derive from fly fishing and educates the general public on this unique fishery and in doing so helps preserve the resource for future generations.
